Parents possess a remarkable knack for unintentionally causing embarrassment, almost as if it comes naturally to them. Throughout our childhood, it often seemed that about half of our parents’ actions or words, particularly in public, had the power to make us fervently wish for the ability to vanish into thin air, never to reappear again.
We lived to tell the stories, and most of us became the embarrassing parents. In an online forum, someone asked, “What’s the most embarrassing thing a parent has done to you?”
1. The Concussed Dad
One dad gave himself a concussion to keep his daughter from dating by smashing a whiskey bottle on his head to appear hardcore. This was after chugging the bottle’s contents, which he had filled with tea.
She adds, “”Don’t concuss yourself this time” became the running joke once I was able to get a date again.”
2. The Job Killer
When applying for a job, you need someone to put in a good word for you. One online user applied for a customer service job, and her Mom’s “good word” was that she was a very shy person and not good with people.
That’s not very supportive now, is it?
Another user shared how their Mom lied about their age on a job application, only to be embarrassed by the recruiter during the interview. His Mom’s defense was he was “close enough” to the required age.
3. A Halloween Embarrassment
An 8-year-old asked her mom to make her a Drew Barrymore costume for Halloween, and she obliged, as a good Mom would. The costume came, but with massive fake t**s to complete the look. In spite of her complaints, her Mom wouldn’t take out the embarrassing fake b***ies.
The now adult 8-year-old adds, “So, for Halloween that year, I had my arms crossed all of trick or treating. I still look back at the pictures from that year with deep anxiety.”
4. Who’s The Boss?
A user narrates how his Mom called him at work to complain about his stepdad, and when he didn’t pick up, the Mom called his boss.
He adds, “And that’s the day my boss and pretty much the entire company lost respect for me. When the mom of their coworkers called him on his boss’s office to talk about personal s**t.”
He resigned not long after that.
I guess Mom believes she is more boss than the boss.
5. Talking Through Movies
Watching movies with a parent can be exhausting, but when they yell and explain everything happening in the movie, it’s a whole new level of exhaustion.
A contributor says, “Imagine, if you will, watching the aftermath of the stampede scene from [The] Lion King and the person next to you yelling “SIMBA IS SAD BECAUSE HER DAD DIED.”
Their parent was the expert in talking during movies, specifically about what was happening in the movie. She was also terrible at paying attention.
6. A Cucumber Problem
A Mom going grocery shopping made a prank on her daughter in the presence of her friend by suggesting that she had a wilting cucumber in her [the daughter’s] bedroom.
No one wants it revealed that she may be having some ” extra-curricular” activities in solitude. Also, there really wasn’t any cucumber in the room.
She adds, “She was definitely just f****g with me, but she did come home with a cucumber!”
7. The Red Day Public Announcement
Menstruation is a universally known phenomenon but also a private matter.
One conversation contributor’s mom didn’t care for privacy. She says, “My mom told everyone (20-30) people I got my period. Thanks, Mom.”
They really didn’t need that information.
8. Match-maker Mom
A Mom thought getting his son a girlfriend would be a good idea.
The online user narrates, “My mom tried to talk to a girl on my behalf; [it] turns out she was in 9th grade. I am 21.”
Mom needs a new job; match-making isn’t it.
9. Badly Singing Dad
A non-Italian dad ruined a perfect 16th birthday by joining the Italian restaurant crew’s singing in terrible Italian [dad’s, not crew’s].
He narrates, “The staff was so stunned they just stopped singing. The other customers around us laughed and applauded, and the staff just walked away. I was mortified.”
10. Underwear Day in School
The unspoken pajama day in school rule is that you don’t go to school in your underwear, even if you usually sleep in your underwear.
Someone says, “My son sleeps in boxers, he has pajamas just for pajama day and sleepovers.”
One parent didn’t care about this rule, and she let her little boy go to school in his underwear, much to the amusement of the other kids. She [the mom] had to be called to pick him up halfway through the day.
He adds, ” I was in elementary school, but I can’t remember if it was 1st or 2nd grade. And the school didn’t notice or care until halfway because I was eating lunch in the cafeteria, and kids were staring at me, some adult must have noticed then.”
11. Anorexia Disclosure
Having an eating disorder is not a dinner table topic, usually. One parent was having too much fun disclosing that her daughter had a bout of anorexia at the Thanksgiving table.
She says her embarrassing moment was having her Mom “Tell everybody at Thanksgiving dinner at her boyfriend’s house about my tween bout with anorexia. I didn’t want to be there in the first place, and she just kept going on and on about how I had carrots for dinner for a year until I had to shout at her to stop.”
Good thing she realized her errors quickly and apologized.
12. Self-Harm Check Gone Wrong
A not-so-sober Mom accidentally caused her daughter to flash a room full of people at Christmas when she pulled her skirt up.
An online conversation narrates, “I was absolutely mortified. She wanted to check for self-harm scars on my thighs, apparently. I’ve never self-harmed before. She should not be allowed to consume alcohol.”
13. Head Lice Pandemic Patient Zero
Head lice are a common occurrence among kids, and they spread fast. A user narrates having lice in pre-school and their Mom calling every parent in class, telling them to check their kids.
He adds, “I probably got it from someone in my class, and the whole class likely already had lice, but kids don’t realise that, so the whole class were calling my dirty and saying I infected them. It was horrible. I was hysterically crying while she called people.”
14. Teeth Checking Mom
Not all teeth are pearl white in nature, some people’s teeth are off-white. One Mom didn’t think her child’s off-white teeth were OK, even after a dentist’s confirmation.
What did she do?
“When I was 15 and being picked up by school friends, she [the mom] took that moment to check my teeth before I left. As in physically opening my mouth and sticking her fingers in.”
15. Eating Cake Off the Floor
One of the birthday or wedding nightmares is dropping the cake. This nightmare came true for one online conversation contributor when her Mom dropped the cake on their 10th birthday.
How did that end?
“My mom then proceeds to start scooping cake off the floor onto plates and insisting that people eat it. Mom isn’t allowed to carry cakes anymore.”
I think Mom believed in the 10-second rule?
16. Interrupting an Important Phone Call
Before cell phones, talking to a crush on the house line was always a risk. Nosy or oblivious parents could interrupt the call at the most inopportune moments. Many users shared hilarious stories like this in the forum. Kids these days will have no idea of the pain this involved.
